We are thrilled to announce that actress Coleen Gray will appear in Monsters, Martians and Mad Scientists: Horror in the Atomic Age.
You may know Ms. Gray as the star of many film noir classics, including Nightmare Alley (1947) and The Killing (1956), or as John Wayne’s costar in Red River (1948); however, she also appeared in three Atomic Age genre films.
In 1957, Ms. Gray costarred with John Beal and Kenneth Tobey in The Vampire. The film is unusual among vampire films in that the title character becomes a vampire through scientific means instead of the usual supernatural forces. Rather than being bitten by a vampire, John Beal’s character mistakenly ingests an experimental drug made from the blood of vampire bats.
For Ms. Gray’s next horror film, she had the distinction of playing the final Universal Monster — 1960’s The Leech Woman. In the film, she portrays June Talbot, a woman who discovers she can maintain her youth by killing people and then taking their pineal gland secretions.
AIP’s The Phantom Planet (1961) rounds out Ms. Gray’s Atom Age horror/sci-fi hat trick.
We look forward to discussing all three of these Atomic Era classics in our interview. Watch this space for a “From the set” report in the coming weeks!
